The confluence of the North Fork Nooksack River, South Fork Nooksack River, and Middle Fork Nooksack River anchors this study of Whatcom County's river valley. The landscape is defined by the transition from the high elevations of Smith Peak in the northwest to the agricultural bottomlands where the Nooksack River begins its main course. Local history is preserved in the spatial layout of small timber and farming communities like Deming, Van Zandt, and Clipper, each linked by a network of rural roads such as Marshall Hill Rd and Rutsatz Rd.
