The Gila River meanders through a desert landscape defined by ancient volcanic ranges and seasonal drainages. In this western Maricopa County expanse, the river cuts through the Gila River Canyon between the Gila Bend Mountains and the Painted Rock Mountains. The hydrology of the region is characterized by significant washes such as Yellow Medicine Wash, Fourth of July Wash, and Woolsey Wash, all draining toward the riverbed.
