The North Fork John Day Wilderness and adjacent national forests define this high-elevation landscape where the Greenhorn Mountains meet the Blue Mountain system. This remote terrain is centered on Desolation Butte and characterized by a dense network of creek drainages and ridgeline trails. Significant peaks like Jumpoff Joe Peak, Indian Rock, and Donaldson Rock punctuate the high ground, providing the headwaters for numerous watercourses including the South Fork Desolation Creek and North Fork Desolation Creek.
