The Whitman National Forest dominates this section of the Blue Mountains in Baker County, where the high-elevation landscape is defined by the steep divide of Dooley Mountain. Near the northern edge, the Bald Mountain Airport sits atop a ridge near Bald Mountain, serving this remote timber and recreation area. The topography is deeply incised by drainages such as Stices Gulch, Belgian Gulch, and Dark Canyon, which channel water toward numerous springs and creeks.
