The Purgatoire River winds through the northwest corner of this Colorado landscape, carving the deep Purgatoire Canyon that dominates the immediate topography. This semi-arid region is defined by a network of drainage systems including Henry George Canyon, Doss Canyon, and Perly Canyon, which collectively illustrate the erosive forces at work in Las Animas County. Human presence is sparse, centered primarily on a rural road network of county routes like Co RD 50 and Co RD 153. In the southwestern portion of the sheet, the Pleasant View Cem serves as a lone genealogical marker of local settlement. Further south, the terrain descends into Bachicha Canyon where Bachicha Cr flows, showing the transition between the high plateaus and the canyon floors.
