Little Bayou Terrebonne and its surrounding wetlands define this 1891 survey of the coastal Louisiana landscape. Settlement patterns follow the high ground along the natural levees of the bayous, most notably at Montegut and Dulac. These narrow ribbons of habitable land are separated by vast expanses of marsh and open water, including the prominent Quitman Lake and Lake Barre.
