About this map

The San Juan Mountains dominate this high-altitude landscape, where the Continental Divide weaves through massive peaks and deep river valleys. In the early 1950s, the region's mining heritage is clearly visible in the tight clusters of settlements like Silverton, Telluride, and Ouray, along with smaller sites such as Old Ophir and Howardsville. These towns are linked by a complex transportation network including U.S. 550 and the D & R G W RR, which follows the path of the Animas River south toward Durango.
