The town of Durant sits at the intersection of three eastern Iowa counties, anchoring a landscape defined by agricultural townships and a network of named waterways. Public life in the late twentieth century centered around City Hall, the Fire Station, and Community Hall, while local recreation was found at Dutton Park and Traver Park. The township divisions of Farmington, Cleona, and Wilton reveal the orderly grid of the land, bisected by the north-south line of the Principal Meridian.

To the south, the smaller settlement of Melpine and the Melpine Cem indicate long-standing rural community centers. The terrain is drained by several meandering streams, including Big Elkhorn Creek, Little Elkhorn Creek, and Mud Creek, which cut through the fertile till plains.
