About this map

Elk Hills dominates the southern landscape of this Kern County region, rising sharply above the fertile floor of the San Joaquin Valley. This terrain is defined by a sophisticated and heavy engineering of water management, essential for the agricultural operations of the Central Valley. The massive Governor Edmund G Brown California Aqueduct cuts a bold diagonal across the northern flats, supplemented by a dense network of smaller irrigation and drainage features such as the Deep Wells Ditch, Weed Island Ditch, and Florida Drain. To the west, the Elk Hills-Buttonwillow Airport serves as a lone industrial landmark near the intersection of Stockdale Hwy and Buttonwillow Dr. South of the hills, the terrain descends into the Midway Valley, where Skyline Rd winds through the complex topography of the oil-rich uplands.
