The Middlebury River carves a path through the heart of this landscape, separating the more developed lowlands of Salisbury from the rising terrain of the Green Mountain National Forest. In the mid-1940s, the village of East Middlebury served as a key junction for travel into the mountains along Route 125. The area is defined by its diverse water features, from the expansive Lake Dunmore to the secluded Silver Lake and the industrial presence of the Goshen Dam.
