Russian Wilderness alpine basins and high summits dominate this portion of the Salmon River Mountains in Siskiyou County. High-elevation glacial lakes are a primary feature of the landscape, including Big Blue Lake, Albert Lake, and the remote Eaton Lakes perched near Eaton Peak. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverses the ridgelines, providing a corridor through the Klamath National Forest between Russian Peak and Paynes Lake.

Evidence of human activity is concentrated in the lower elevations and peripheral valleys. The Foster Mine sits on the eastern slopes, while the J H Ranch and Hidden Valley Ranch mark the limited agricultural presence in the north. Drainage systems like Taylor Creek and Jackson Creek define the complex topography, flowing away from the central massif where numerous springs, such as Twin Lakes Spring, feed the high-country watershed.
