The high desert landscape of El Mirage Valley straddles the boundary between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties during a period of transition in the late 1960s. The small settlement of El Mirage sits at the edge of this arid expanse, where sparse water sources like Moody Springs and Eller Slough supported early habitation. The terrain is defined by prominent volcanic-like peaks such as Black Butte, Mt Elmo, and the Three Sisters.

Evidence of mid-century infrastructure and desert industry is scattered throughout, notably the 36 Field (Abandoned) airfield and several mineral extraction sites, including a Shaft and Prospect on Black Mtn. The southern portion of the quadrangle is bisected by the Southern Pacific railroad and Pearblossom Hy, reflecting the vital transportation corridors that shaped development in this portion of the Antelope Valley. The survey also captures numerous reservoirs and quarries, illustrating the region's managed resources and geological utility.
