Elk Basin defines the northern reaches of this landscape in Park County, where the terrain transitions toward the Montana border. The geography is characterized by significant natural depressions and elevated plateaus, most notably the wide expanse of Big Sand Coulee and the prominent rising of Polecat Bench in the southeast. Water is a scarce but defining element, represented by the winding course of Silver Tip Cr as it cuts through the basin.
