About this map

Ellenville and the Shawangunk ridge anchor this early twentieth-century study of the Hudson Valley hinterlands. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition between the steep, rocky elevations of the Shawangunk Mountains—home to landmarks like Sams Pt., High Pt., and the Ice Caves—and the fertile lowlands of the Wallkill and Mamakating valleys. A critical corridor of transportation history runs along the base of the ridge, where the D. & H. Canal (Abandoned) follows the path of Sandburg Creek alongside the New York Ontario and Western RR.
