Emigrant Gap serves as a prominent pass through the high northern plains of Glacier County, Montana, situated just south of the international border with Canada. This landscape is defined by the hydraulic engineering of the Saint Mary Canal, which skirts the western edge of the quadrangle, and the winding headwaters of the North Fork Milk River. The terrain transitions from broad, named plateaus like Hungry Horse Flat and Pikuni Flat to the deep incisions of Fox Coulee and Dubray Coulee.
