The Gulf of Santa Catalina coastline in the late 1940s reveals a string of burgeoning seaside communities connected by the Coast Highway and the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad. These coastal settlements, including Leucadia, Encinitas, and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, are defined by their proximity to the water and the prominent salt marshes and estuaries of Batiquitos Lagoon and San Elijo Lagoon.

Inland, the terrain rises into the canyons of Green Valley and Lux Canyon, where the agricultural and ranching heritage of the region is still evident near the Los Encinitos (Rancho Santa Fe) approximate boundary. This survey captures the area just as the post-war population boom began to fill in the coastal bluffs between Ponto and Solana Beach, anchored by local institutions like San Dieguito Union H. S. and the navigation Beacon at Leucadia.
