Lake Mattamuskeet dominates the southern reaches of this landscape, its expansive shoreline defining the geography of eastern Hyde County. The northern borders of the lake are bound by a grid-like network of rural roads and drainage infrastructure, including the prominent Jarvis Canal and its namesake Jarvis Canal Rd. To the east, the settlement of Engelhard serves as a primary hub, situated near the intersection of several local routes such as N Lake Rd and Roper Ln. The interior terrain is marked by a transition from agricultural and timber interests, evidenced by Logging Rd, toward the water systems of Swan Cr. This survey illustrates the intricate relationship between the coastal wetlands and the human efforts to manage the low-lying plains through an extensive series of avenues and streets that extend northward into the marshy flats.
