Low-lying wetlands and thick evergreen shrub bogs dominate this coastal plain landscape along the border of Beaufort and Craven Counties. The sprawling Big Pocosin occupies much of the central and eastern terrain, intersected by drainage systems such as Palmetto Swamp, Mauls Swamp, and Beaverdam Swamp. These hydrologic patterns have historically shaped the human geography of the region, pushing settlements and agriculture to the better-drained margins.

In the southern portion of the map, the small community of Ernul serves as a local hub, anchored by several rural congregations including Macedonia Ch and St James Ch. Evidence of 20th-century land use is visible in the presence of the Welbourn Airstrip and a designated Picnic Area, while various unnamed Cem sites across the sheet offer points of interest for genealogical research near Fisher Swamp and Little Swift Cr.
