Fales Hot Springs and the surrounding Mono County high country are centered in this 2015 study, dominated by the complex terrain of the Toiyabe National Forest. The landscape is defined by the convergence of major waterways, including the West Walker River and the Little Walker River, which meet near the road intersection at Sonora Junction. This area served as a vital transit corridor through the eastern Sierra, where Us-395 passes through the narrow Devils Gate.
