The Ouachita River meanders across a landscape defined by expansive bottomland wetlands and managed conservation areas on the Arkansas-Louisiana border. Much of the terrain is protected within the Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge and the Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Refuge, where complex water systems like Mossy Lake, Fish Slough, and Deadpecker Slough dominate the geography. Historically significant high ground is identified by labels such as Big Mound Ridge and Three Beech Prairie, which stand out amidst the pervasive sloughs and brakes.
