The Salmon River carves a deep, winding path through this portion of the Idaho backcountry, serving as the primary corridor for small riverfront settlements and mining activity. In the mid-1990s, the landscape is defined by its transition between the Nez Perce National Forest and the Payette National Forest, with a significant portion preserved within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Human footprints are concentrated at river bars—small level patches of land along the water—including Fivemile Bar, Boise Bar, and Gaines Bar.
