The San Francisco Peaks and their towering Humphreys Peak dominate this landscape, which transitions from the timber of Kaibab National Forest to the arid expanses of the Painted Desert. In the mid-1950s, the regional economy was anchored by the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, serving the growing hub of Flagstaff and moving supplies to the Navajo Army Depot.
