Mad River and the South Fork Trinity River dominate this pocket of Northern California, carving through the overlap of the Trinity National Forest and Six Rivers National Forest. The landscape is defined by the high elevations of South Fork Mtn and Mad River Ridge, which isolate small, historic flatlands and canyon settlements. The tiny community of Ruth sits near the southern end of Ruth Lake, a significant reservoir on the river.
