Fort Bidwell sits at the northern edge of Surprise Valley, where the high desert meets the eastern slopes of the Warner Mountains. This 2012 topographic record documents the town's grid and its relationship to the vast Upper Lake basin to the east. The landscape is defined by drainage patterns from the mountains, with Soldier Cr, Venning Cr, and Bidwell Cr flowing toward the valley floor. A Hot Spring and the Fort Bidwell Airport mark the immediate surroundings of the settlement.
