The arid plains south of Colorado Springs are defined by essential water management systems, including the Hanover Ditch Number 1 and the Jackson and Burke Ditch. This 2016 survey shows the critical role of these waterways as they parallel and cross the drainages of Fountain Cr and Chico Cr. The landscape is largely structured by a geometric grid of rural routes such as Hanover Rd and S Meridian Rd, which divide the high plains terrain across the border of El Paso and Pueblo Counties.
