Stillwater Range peaks overlook the arid expanse of Churchill County in this early 1970s survey. The landscape is defined by the stark transition from the high desert ridges to the evaporative floors of Salt Wells Basin and Fourmile Flat (Alkali). Of significant interest to local historians is the Historical Marker (Site of Sand Springs Pony Express Station) and nearby Ruins, which mark a vital segment of the mid-19th-century mail route through the Nevada desert. Evidence of early resource extraction and range management is scattered throughout the area, including a Borax Pit, various Borrow Pits, and water-gathering sites like the Tunnel Spring Windmill. Large Sand Dunes and the prominent Sand Mountain dominate the eastern portion of the flats, while a lone Grave remains near the roadway, reflecting the isolation of this corridor.
