2024 Map of Fox Butte

About this map

The volcanic topography of the high desert dominates this 2024 survey of the Deschutes National Forest along the border of Lake and Deschutes counties. Rising above the plateau are several prominent cinder cones and summits, including the eponymous Fox Butte, Burnt Butte, and the distinctively named Moohoo'oo Mtn. The landscape is a network of ridges and flats, with Hoona Ridge separating broad level areas like Porcupine Flat and Aspen Flat. Water management in this arid terrain is evidenced by several dispersed catchments, most notably Kitteredge Reservoir and West Reservoir. In the southern portion of the sheet, the terrain breaks into more unusual geological formations at The Blowouts and the rugged outcrop of Buzzard Rock. This map provides a contemporary record of forest service access and resource management in a part of Oregon defined by its complex volcanic history and high-elevation basins.
