About this map

Deerlodge National Forest dominates this high-altitude landscape in Granite County, where the rugged topography is defined by the Dora Thorn Ridge and peaks exceeding 8,000 feet. The western portion of the map is marked by the legacy of the silver and gold mining era, including the historic settlement of Granite and numerous mines and prospects scattered through Stewart Gulch. The Red Lion Mine and the small settlement of Red Lion represent the area's industrial history, while the southern slopes of Rumsey Mountain transition toward modern recreation with a ski lift visible near the edge of the Discovery Basin Ski Area. Dozens of alpine water bodies, including Fred Burr Lake, Racetrack Lake, and the Copper Creek Lakes, feed into a complex network of drainages like Warm Springs Creek and the various forks of Flint Creek.
