Burnt River Canyon and its complex network of steep drainages dominate this Baker County landscape. High points like Chicken Peak and Stump Spring Butte overlook a rugged interior marked by the deep cut of the Burnt River, which flows toward the southern edge of the sheet near Bridgeport Valley. The area is a mosaic of public land within the Whitman National Forest, where water sources like Bennett Reservoir and numerous named springs, such as Tule Spring and Fawn Spring, supported local land use.
