About this map

Rainbow Gardens and the jagged peaks of Sunrise Mtn dominate this Mojave Desert landscape just east of the Las Vegas Valley. Mapping from 1969 and 1970, with revisions from 1980, shows a transition from military infrastructure to recreational and industrial utility. The northern boundary is defined by Nellis Air Force Base, while the southern reaches descend toward the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the waters of Lake Mead. The terrain is marked by significant geological and archaeological interest, notably Gypsum Cave and a Natural Arch located near Lake Mead Boulevard. Industrial activity is evident through various Quarries and the White Eagle Mine, while the eastern edge follows the Union Pacific rail corridor near the Gale Hills. Numerous Airway Beacons on the summits of Frenchman Mtn and Lava Butte underscore the importance of this high ground for regional navigation during the late twentieth century.
