Fruitland and the surrounding high country along the Buncombe and Henderson county line are defined by a complex network of ridges and gaps. The landscape is punctuated by prominent peaks like Bearwallow Mtn and Bald Top Mtn, which overlook several distinct gaps such as Fairview Gap, Stroupe Gap, and Terry Gap. These natural passes have historically funneled travel between the valleys of Cane Creek and Hoopers Creek.
