Garfield sits at the confluence of several high-altitude drainages, serving as a primary point of human settlement in this high-alpine region. The landscape is defined by the high peaks of the Sawatch Range, including the towering Tabeguache Peak and Mt Aetna. Traversing the spine of the continent, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail winds through the heart of the terrain, crossing the historic Original Monarch Pass and passing notable landmarks like Bald Mtn and Clover Mtn. The divide also serves as the boundary between the Gunnison National Forest and the San Isabel National Forest.
