1963 Map of Garland Prairie

About this map

Garland Prairie occupies the center of this high-elevation landscape, where the open grasslands of the Kaibab National Forest meet the denser timber of the Coconino National Forest. The northern reaches are defined by the active corridor of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, which skirts the base of the surrounding highlands. This era of land management is clearly visible through the numerous water catchment features like Allan Tank and Horse Lake, supporting livestock and wildlife across the arid plateau. To the east, the Navajo Army Depot Military Reservation Boundary marks a significant transition into restricted military lands. The terrain drops off sharply in the south into the deep, winding cuts of Sycamore Canyon and Volunteer Canyon, highlighting the complex drainage patterns and natural springs such as Garland Spring and Poison Spring that were vital to early ranching and travel in this part of Coconino County.
