Stonyford serves as a primary hub of settlement in this northern California landscape, located near the Stonyford Cem and the waters of Stony Creek. The terrain is characterized by a series of prominent ridges and canyons within the Mendocino National Forest, including the namesake Gilmore Peak and the high ground of Lovelady Ridge. These elevations provide the headwaters for numerous drainage systems such as Little Stony Creek and Sullivan Creek.

A network of forest routes and trails, like the Hornet Nest Ridge Trl and Auk Auk Trl, provides access to interior features including Hornet Nest Spring and the secluded Wolf Glade. To the east, the landscape transitions toward the East Park Reservoir near the settlement of Lodoga. This 2021 survey illustrates the contemporary balance between protected federal forest lands and the small valley communities of western Colusa County.
