Extensive industrial activity defines this portion of the Alabama coalfields during the early 1970s, where numerous Strip Mine operations dominate the topography of Big Ridge. The landscape is centered around the Mulberry Fork of the Black Warrior River, which forms the navigable Bankhead Lake in the southern reaches of the quadrangle. Significant infrastructure for the era includes a large Powerplant at Gorgas, supported by a complex of conveyor systems and the Southern railway line.
