Lake Superior dominates the southern edge of this Cook County survey, where the harbor at Grand Marais serves as the focal point for settlement and infrastructure. The coastal corridor along Minnesota Highway 61 links the town with neighboring Chippewa City and Croftville, while the interior rises sharply toward the Sawtooth Mountains and Sawtooth Bluff. This landscape is defined by the transition from the busy lakefront, including the Cook County Courthouse, to the expansive wilderness of the Superior National Forest.

Moving inland, the elevation increases toward Maple Hill, which is marked by its namesake Maple Hill Cem. The area's complex drainage is visible through the winding paths of the Devil Track River and Little Devil Track River, which cut through the highlands.
