About this map

Grand Mesa National Forest defines this high-altitude landscape on the border of Mesa and Delta counties. The topography is dominated by an extensive network of artificial water storage, including Bonham Reservoir, Atkinson Reservoir, and the numerous numbered Cottonwood Lakes. These reservoirs, connected by a web of creeks like Cottonwood Creek and Big Creek, illustrate the complex water management systems required to support the surrounding region. The terrain transitions from the flat expanses of Webb Flats and Sheep Flats to the prominent heights of Horse Mountain and the Elk Mountains. Recreational infrastructure is central to the area's modern character, with the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway providing primary access. This is complemented by a historic network of paths such as the Crag Crest Trail, Bonham Trail, and the Old Grand Mesa Road, which navigate the steep descents from the mesa top into valleys like Death Valley.
