Lake Thomas A Edison dominates the southwestern corner of this landscape, its shores marked by designated Campsite areas and the rising terrain of Bear Ridge. The high-altitude backcountry of Fresno County is defined here by the intersection of the John Muir Wilderness, the Ansel Adams Wilderness, and the Sierra National Forest. A network of trails, including the John Muir Trail (Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail), navigates through prominent gaps such as Silver Pass and Goodale Pass.

High peaks and alpine lakes characterize the interior, with Graveyard Peak and Mount Izaak Walton overlooking a dense cluster of water bodies including Graveyard Lakes, Mott Lake, and the uniquely named Devils Bathtub.
