Ruby Mountains terrain dominates this Nevada landscape, defined by high-elevation crests and a complex network of drainage basins. Within the Humboldt National Forest, the topography is carved by numerous seasonal and perennial flows, including Gilbert Creek and the various forks of Smith Creek. The area is characterized by an extensive system of wilderness access, centered on the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail, which traverses the eastern heights. To the south, the Carville Basin provides a lower-elevation contrast where Carville Creek emerges from the mountain slopes. The presence of Suttles Ditch indicates early water management efforts in this arid environment. Significant landmarks like Green Mountain and the high-altitude Lost Lake serve as key points for understanding the hydrologic and geologic structure of this portion of Elko County.
