Grinnell and the small community of Campus anchor the northern edge of this high plains landscape, situated just as the terrain begins to break away into the drainages of the Smoky Hill River valley. The grid-like agricultural roads, including Gove 28 and Angles Rd, crisscross a landscape defined by seasonal watercourses. The most prominent of these are Big Creek, which parallels the modern interstate corridor, and the winding North Branch Hackberry Creek to the south. This area illustrates the transition from the organized street grids of small-town Grinnell, with its 5th St and Oak St, to the wide-open ranch and farm sections of Gove County. The alignment of Old Hwy 40 remains visible, tracing the historic route that preceded the interstate system through western Kansas.
