The Turkey River carves a deep valley through the limestone-rich topography of this region, shaping the development of Elgin and the surrounding agricultural landscape along the Fayette Co and Clayton Co boundary. The area is defined by its deep Lutheran roots and early settlement patterns, evidenced by a high density of rural burial grounds such as Highland Lutheran Cem, Marion Lutheran Cem, and East Clermont Lutheran Cem.
