The massive water infrastructure of the Los Angeles Aqueduct and Second Los Angeles Aqueduct dominates this portion of Inyo County, where two major reservoirs serve as critical storage points for the city's water supply. The North Haiwee Reservoir and South Haiwee Reservoir are linked by the Merritt Cut, creating a long linear basin between the foothills of the Coso Range and the high desert plains. Evidence of the engineering required to manage this system is visible in the complex network of diversions, including the Intake Tower Pipe Line, the North Haiwee Dam, and the South Haiwee Dam. Beyond the water works, the landscape transitions into the high arid plateaus of Cactus Flat and Little Cactus Flat, where natural drainages like Hogback Creek and Summit Creek descend toward the valley floor.
