The White River meanders across the northern edge of this Lyman County landscape, defining the northern border of the Black Dog and Iona districts. In the early 1950s, this area remained deeply rural, characterized by scattered rural schoolhouses that served as community hubs for families in the region. Local children attended classes at Walcott Sch, Lindgren Sch, or the remote Bull Creek Sch situated near the southern boundary.

A significant transformation is noted in the margin of this survey: the broken light-blue lines along the river indicate areas destined to be submerged by the Fort Randall Reservoir. This hydrological change altered the character of the river valley, which is fed by numerous tributaries including Red Butte Cr, Sand Creek, and Bull Creek.
