About this map

The small settlement of Hamlet sits on the southern edge of the high plains in the mid-1970s, defined by the industrial infrastructure of the Burlington Northern railroad and its associated Grain Elevators Storage Bins. This prairie landscape is characterized by a sparse distribution of agrarian landmarks, including a central Town Hall and the Trinity Cem. The terrain transitions from the Upland in the north through regions labeled as Hayland and View, eventually dropping into the Sauk Valley. Pockmarked with numerous depressions and small water bodies like Jensen Lake, the area also shows evidence of natural resource extraction with an Oil Well and a Gravel Pit located near the Divide Co Williams Co border. This survey provides a clear look at the intersection of late-century rail-side industry and the rural township layout of the northern plains.
