Hanson Reservoir and the meandering Smith River anchor this central Montana landscape within the Big Belt Mountains region. The hydrology is complex, defined by the convergence of numerous seasonal and perennial flows including Newlan Creek, Woods Gulch Creek, and Big Birch Creek. These drainages create a series of alluvial features such as the Upper Birch Creek Bar and Lower Birch Creek Bar, which are significant markers for understanding local geomorphology and land use patterns.
