Harlan and the surrounding Big Elk Valley represent a secluded pocket of the Coast Range within the Siuslaw National Forest. The landscape is defined by the complex drainage of Big Elk Cr and its many tributaries, including Feagles Cr and Grant Cr. Local genealogy and land use history are anchored by the Harlan Cem and various named landmarks such as Wolf Cabin, reflecting a long-standing relationship between the community and the timbered hillsides.
