The Rio Grande corridor in southern New Mexico defines the agricultural and transportation layout of this region. The valley floor is crisscrossed by an intricate irrigation system, including the Hatch Canal, Salem Lateral, and Rodey Lateral, which support the farming communities of Hatch, Salem, and Rodey. These settlements are concentrated along the river and the Pan American Centeral Hwy, which cuts diagonally across the desert landscape. To the northeast, the terrain rises sharply into the Caballo Mountains, while Rodey Canyon and Spring Canyon carve into the uplands to the south.

Local history and genealogy are anchored by the Hatch PO and two burial grounds, Hatch Cem and Rodey Cem. The area’s modern infrastructure is represented by the Hatch Municipal Airport and the River Levee system protecting the low-lying valley. The map documents a landscape of high-desert transitions, where water management infrastructure allows for concentrated habitation and transit between the mountain ranges.
