The Rio Grande flows through the northeast corner of this landscape, defining the agricultural life of the Rincon Valley. In the late 1950s, a complex irrigation and drainage network supported the valley floor, including the Rincon Lateral and Tonuco Drain. Just east of the river, the A T & S F railroad tracks parallel the water, crossing near the Tonuco Bridge. Away from the river, the terrain rises into high desert country marked by named arroyos like Bignell Arroyo and Hersey Arroyo.
