Hatch Mesa and the surrounding Mancos Desert W define this part of eastern Utah, where the high desert plateau meets the distinct formations of the Book Cliffs. The topography is dominated by a series of mesas and deep cuts, including the Green River Gap and Blaze Canyon. Human presence is concentrated along the east-west corridor of Old Hwy 6 & 50, passing through the small settlement of Floy.

The landscape is marked by intricate drainage systems that cut through the desert floor, such as Little Grand Wash and Solitude Wash. These intermittent watercourses provide the primary relief in an otherwise arid environment characterized by features like Horse Mesa and Christmas Ridge. Further south, the Blue Flat Reservoir and Ruby Ranch Rd indicate the limited agricultural or ranching infrastructure that has attempted to tame this desert terrain.
