Denton Strip Mine and a cluster of smaller operations like the Sun Mine, Barton Mine, and Rice Mine highlight the industrial character of this Routt County landscape. Situated within the Williams Fork Mountains, the area is defined by a complex drainage system where the East Fork Williams Fork and Sand Creek meet numerous named gulches. Water management for mining or ranching is evident through a series of engineered features, including the Dillabaugh Reservoir, Detwiller Reservoir, and Knife Edge Reservoir, the latter of which is secured by the Knife Edge Dam. This 2011 survey captures the network of remote county roads, such as County Rd 53 and County Rd 29, that provide the primary access to these upland resources and isolated peaks like those near Moody Lake.
